Odoo for Manufacturers in Nigeria: Production, Costing and Raw Materials in One System

Growth Stack consultant working with a manufacturing client's team on tablets and laptops on site

You know what you sold last month. But do you know what each product actually cost to make?

For many Nigerian manufacturers, millers and agro-processors, the honest answer is "roughly". Product cost is worked out in a spreadsheet weeks after the month ends, using raw material prices that have already changed. By the time the number is ready, the pricing decisions it should have informed have already been made.

Here are five problems we see in Nigerian factories, and how Odoo brings production, costing and raw materials into one system.

Five problems manufacturers deal with

1. Raw material stock that doesn't match the store ledger

The store says there are 400 bags. The ledger says 520. Issues to production were written on a requisition slip that never got entered, or a delivery was received but not recorded. Every count turns into an investigation.

2. Product cost worked out after the month ends

Costing is done in Excel by one person in finance, using averages and estimates. Nobody on the factory floor sees it, and nobody in sales knows the true margin on the order they are about to quote.

3. Production orders on paper, with wastage never recorded

Production runs from a whiteboard or paper job cards. What was planned and what was actually used are never compared, so wastage, spillage and rework stay invisible until the stock count.

4. Imported materials priced in dollars, sold in Naira

Raw materials and packaging are often imported. Freight, duty, clearing and exchange rate movements all change the real cost of each unit, but they are added to the books separately, if at all, and rarely make it into the product cost.

5. Machine breakdowns nobody planned for

When a key machine stops, production stops. Without a maintenance plan, servicing happens after something breaks, and nobody can say how much downtime cost the business last quarter.

How Odoo handles each one

Bills of materials and accurate raw material stock. Each product has a bill of materials listing its components and quantities. When a production order runs, Odoo consumes the raw materials from stock automatically, so the store ledger and the shelves move together.

Work orders and scrap recording. Production is planned in manufacturing orders, broken into work orders for each step or work centre. Operators record what was produced and what was scrapped, so wastage is captured when it happens, not discovered months later.

Costing as production happens. Because materials, labour time and overheads are recorded against each manufacturing order, Odoo can show the cost of what you produced and compare it with the expected cost. Finance and sales see the same numbers.

Landed costs and multi-currency. Purchases can be made in dollars and booked in Naira at the right rate. Freight, duty and clearing charges can be added as landed costs and spread across the items they relate to, so they flow into product cost.

Maintenance and quality. The Maintenance app schedules preventive servicing for each machine and records breakdowns, so you can see where downtime comes from. The Quality app adds checks at receipt, during production or before dispatch, with failures recorded and followed up.

And because manufacturing, inventory, purchasing, sales and accounting share one database, every production order updates stock and the books at the same time.

Where to start

You don't have to switch everything on at once. A common path for manufacturers is:

  1. Inventory and purchasing first. Get raw material and finished goods stock accurate, with clean product codes and units of measure.
  2. Then manufacturing. Bills of materials, production orders and scrap recording.
  3. Then quality and maintenance. Once production data is flowing, add checks and maintenance plans.

Each step builds on clean data from the one before. We explain how scope affects the length of each stage in How Long Does an Odoo Implementation Take? If you also run branches or depots, our article on Odoo for distributors covers stock across locations, and our manufacturing industry page shows how we work with factories.
