How to Choose an Odoo Partner in Nigeria: 10 Questions to Ask

Odoo is the same software in Lagos as it is in London. Every partner sells the same modules from the same publisher. So why do some Odoo projects go live smoothly while others drag on, run over budget or end with a system nobody uses?

In most cases the software is not the problem. ERP projects succeed or fail on delivery: how well the partner understands your business, plans the work, moves your data and trains your people. Choosing a partner is the most important decision in the whole project.

Here are 10 questions to ask every partner on your shortlist, and what a good answer sounds like.

1. Are you an official Odoo partner, and at what level?

Odoo publishes its partner directory on odoo.com. It shows each partner's level (Ready, Silver or Gold), the country they work in and the client references they have submitted. Check it yourself rather than relying on a sales deck. A higher level tells you the partner has sold and delivered more Odoo, and that Odoo has vetted their work.

2. Can I speak to two clients in my industry?

A distributor and a pharmaceutical manufacturer need very different things from Odoo. Ask for references in your sector, and ask to speak to them directly. Good questions for those clients: Did the project finish on the agreed date? Did the system do what was promised? Would they hire the partner again?

3. What is your implementation method, step by step?

A serious partner can show you its method in writing: the stages, what is delivered at each one, and who signs off before the next stage starts. Be wary of anyone who goes straight from a demo to "we'll start configuring next week". We explain what drives the length of each stage in How Long Does an Odoo Implementation Take?

4. Who will actually work on my project, and are they in Nigeria?

The people who sell a project are not always the people who deliver it. Ask to meet the project manager and the lead consultant. Ask where they are based. A team in your time zone, who can come on site for workshops, training and go-live, makes a real difference to the pace of a project.

5. How will you move our data from the current system?

Customers, suppliers, products, opening balances and stock all need to come across, and they need to be correct. Ask who cleans the data, who checks it, how many test loads they run, and how they reconcile opening balances with your auditors' figures.

6. How do you set up Nigerian tax and currency?

VAT, withholding tax, FIRS e-invoicing requirements and Naira transactions alongside dollars are everyday realities for Nigerian businesses. Ask the partner to show you how they configure these in Odoo, and how they keep up when rules change. A partner who has done this many times will answer quickly and specifically.

7. What does training look like?

Ask whether training is built around each team's daily work or is a general tour of Odoo. Ask who gets trained, how many sessions, and whether your key users will be able to train new staff after the project ends. Good partners hand over knowledge, not just a system.

8. What happens after go-live?

The first weeks after go-live are when most questions come up. Ask what support looks like on day one and in month six. What are the response times? Who answers, and in which time zone? Is support a monthly plan or pay-as-you-go? Who handles Odoo version upgrades?

9. How do you price the project?

Ask what is included, how the scope is fixed, how payments are staged and how change requests are quoted. Licences are billed by Odoo directly, so make sure you understand which costs go to Odoo and which go to the partner. A clear, written scope protects both sides.

10. What would make you say no to a project?

This question tells you a lot. A partner who never says no will promise anything to win the deal. A good partner will tell you when a requirement is better handled another way, when your timeline is unrealistic, or when your business is not ready yet.

Red flags to watch for

  • No written method. If they can't show you the stages, they probably don't follow any.
  • No local team. Delivery entirely from abroad, with no one who can come on site.
  • "We can do everything in two weeks." Speed promised before anyone has looked at your processes or data.
  • No references in your sector, or references you are not allowed to call.
  • Vague pricing. A single number with no scope behind it.
